I think the quotation below from GreenMed Info just about sums it up. It’s not that an evidence base isn’t important, it’s the fact that anything outside of that gold standard, even if it has been in use for thousands of years with no ill effect, is regarded as invalid.

A case in point is the way in which the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is doing a wonderful job in making herbal medicine available only from large multi-national companies, whilst turning a blind eye to breast implants which they knew to be faulty years ago.

“Evidence-based” medicine presupposes that unless proven effective by double-bland, randomized and placebo-controlled trials, i.e. multinational corporation or government funding, a treatment can not be said to be valid. This “gold standard” obeys the “golden rule”: he who owns the gold makes the rules, i.e. No Money = No Evidence = No Legal Right to be Used.

This week my grandchildren were very excited about appearing in the nativity play at their village school. It occurred to me to wonder whether any of them knew what frankincense and myrrh actually are, so I gave some to my grandson who tells me that everyone was very excited to see the actual thing.

I know that when I was a child these things seemed to have mythical, almost magical, qualities and I had no idea what they were – nor did anyone tell me. Actually they are still widely used today.

Frankincense (Boswellia thurifera) and myrrh (Commiphora molmol) are both trees and the resins derived from them have important medicinal properties and were probably given to Jesus for that reason. They are both active against all sorts of infections and, in a time when there were no antibiotics, this would have been a very important and valuable gift.

In order to make them more palatable, they were often steeped in wine for use as liquid medicines, and they were also used in to embalm bodies after death. Frankincense is strongly anti-infective which is why the resin is burned in churches in order to purify the air, but in former less hygiene conscious times it would have had the additional benefit of masking the odour of unwashed bodies and clothes crowded together indoors.

Frankincense can be made into a variety of different medicines and creams and relieves all sorts of rheumatic conditions. I find it especially useful in my practice to help with the painful symptoms of gout but it can also be used in bronchitis and similar chest conditions. In former times it was used for leprosy.

Frankincense tree

Myrrh has similar uses to frankincense and, if anything, is more strongly anti-infective and anti-viral. It is probably one of the most widely used herbal antiseptics in the world and has even been proved to be active against the Staphylococus aureus infections which so plague our hospitals today. It is a very effective mouthwash too, though it does have the less desirable side effect of staining the teeth yellow.

Extracting myrrh resin

I don’t think there is any need to go into why gold was so important – or maybe there is? If the banks hadn’t forgotten about having as much gold in their vaults as they have issued in paper money, we wouldn’t all be in the mess we are in today. But I guess that’s a bit too political for this website!

Now that so many herbal medicines have been swept off the shelf in the EU’s relentless drive to makes us all safe by means of the Traditional and Herbal Medicinal Products Directive which came into force last month, we discover after all that herbs aren’t the problem. According to scientists who have written to the Prime Minister and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley expressing their concern about drug failures and adverse drug reactions, more than 10,000 people die every year from bad reactions to prescribed treatments and it costs £2bn a year to treat them.

As a coffee addict, I am always pleased to see research which tells me that it is not always the villain it is supposed to be. Now, a large study using data from just under 35,000 women taken over a 10 year period has found that those women who drink coffee daily are at a reduced risk for heart disease and strokes. Moreover, the association between coffee consumption and cerebral infarction was not modified by smoking status, body mass index, history of diabetes or hypertension, or alcohol consumption.

One of the more worrying aspects of the new Traditional Herbal and Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) which is coming into force on May 1st is that, although I will be able to continue dispensing liquid and dried herb prescriptions as before, I will no longer be able to access any of the herbal tablets on which many of my patients have come to rely. This is because they are sourced from small companies who have decided that they cannot afford the enormous cost (£80-£90,000) of obtaining individual licenses to sell them.

Cost, of course is no deterrent to the likes of Tesco’s and Holland and Barrett who are obtaining new licenses from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on a daily basis.

I am appalled to discover that Holland and Barrett’s and Boots’ ultimate parent company is the awful Carlyle Group, who have their fingers in all sorts of pies all over the world and whose senior management is all ex CIA, including George Bush senior.

http://www.carlyle.com/portfolio/item10322.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland_%26_Barrett

This explains why Boots is able legally to avoid UK taxation by having its head office as a post office box in Switzerland.

I can’t help calling to mind the author’s note in “The Constant Gardner”, wherein John le Carre says that his actual research into big pharma makes his book look like “a walk in the park”.

16th February 2011

The Health Secretary announced to Parliament today that herbal medicine practitioners will be regulated from April 2012. The four UK health departments have agreed that the Health Professions Council (HPC) should hold a statutory register of practitioners who supply unlicensed herbal medicines to people to enable the supply of herbal medicines to continue after 30 April 2011. This will ensure that practitioners have met specified registration standards. Practitioner regulation will be underpinned by medicines legislation which will provide further safeguards to protect public health.
